Replatforming without losing your search rankings
Most traffic drops after a migration are avoidable. They come from four specific mistakes, and all four are checkable before launch.
Replatforming is where hard-won organic traffic quietly disappears. Almost always it is one of four causes, and each is preventable.
1. Missing or lazy redirects
Every indexed URL on the old site needs a 301 to its closest equivalent — product, category, blog post, and the odd landing page nobody remembers. Redirecting everything to the homepage is the single most damaging shortcut in commerce migrations.
2. Changed URL structure without a reason
If the new platform allows the old URL pattern, keep it. Changing `/products/x` to `/shop/x` buys you nothing and costs you a redirect hop on every page.
3. Lost on-page detail
Titles, meta descriptions, headings and structured data are often rebuilt from templates and lose the specificity that made pages rank. Export the old set and compare page by page before launch.
4. Slower pages
New platforms frequently launch heavier than what they replaced. Set a performance budget during the build, not after.
The pre-launch checklist
- Full crawl of the old site, exported and mapped
- Redirect map tested on staging, including edge cases
- Titles, descriptions and schema compared old versus new
- Core Web Vitals measured on staging
- Search Console and analytics ready on day one
- A traffic-by-URL baseline saved, so you can prove what happened
Do these six and a migration is usually flat to positive within a month.
